Description

It’s among the lightest in the test and has a clean, simple design. Despite its lightness, the nylon fabric feels robust. It uses Pertex Shield for waterproofing, which has a rated hydrostatic head of 10,000mm. Serious protection from the elements, this is a go-to lightweight waterproof shell for mountain walking and everyday general use. Summary: Overkill for Scottish winter, but if you are Polar-bound, or off to Alaska or the Himalaya, and need something super warm, these fatties would be brilliant.

A fully waterproof, taped outer shell incorporating synthetic Primaloft Silver insulation to create a toasty warm waterproof shell. Craghoppers uses about 70 recycled bottles in the men’s version and 60 in the women’s during manufacture of the Dynamic. The durable water-resistant treatment of the outer shell is PFC-free, and uses Ecoshield plant-based treatment. The garment is covered by the brand’s Guarantee for Life. The company says it uses minimal water in its dyeing process. It imports its goods to Liverpool, reducing road miles by 400,000 a year and has zero landfill waste from its facilities. It says it is committed to net zero by 2050. In this review we've looked at warmth, dexterity, water resistance, durability and overall design. We've climbed, skied, hiked and camped in these mitts at low temperatures and in terrible weather, and here are our findings. The hood has a rear halo adjuster with spring toggle and there are twin front cord adjusters. The peak has a wire adjuster and the hood can be rolled up and secured using a flap with press-stud closure. It is big enough to be worn with a helmet. One thing to note: the Moiazza was quite a snug fit, so you may need to consider trying a size larger than your normal choice. They are clearly a high quality product and seem well put together. They have really easy to use drawcords, nice and chunky, and a large gauntlet that covers the wrist easily. We had them in size large, and they were roomy for the size, swallowing hands easily. At first glance these mitts look pretty chunky, but when you put them on you realise that most of the 'chunk' is behind the hand, meaning the Nebula mitts are surprisingly dextrous (for their size).

The Montane Meteor and Craghoppers Dynamic will suit those on a limited budget. The former will suit fast movers while the latter has a design that doesn’t look out of place on the High Street as well as on the country trail. I liked the clean and minimalist design of the Salewa Moiazza, which performed very well and is the best choice for hillgoers who want minimum weight and pared-down features, yet with good performance. This is the updated Ridgemaster, introduced this season and made from Gore-Tex three-layer Performance Shell fabric, with a combination of polyester and polyamide material. The Meteor’s overall fit is trim, but with enough room for layering. There’s plenty of length in the arms and torso as well as a scooped hem for added rear coverage. As an all-rounder for general outdoor use, it does the job extremely well, and is justifiably popular. Full Specifications The brand’s widespread distribution in the UK, Europe and the USA means the Downpour is available from multiple retailers, both online and in-store. As such, it is often discounted, making it an even better value buy. Full SpecificationsThe Prosport’s main zip is protected by a storm flap which uses press-studs to secure it. I found these less convenient than hook-and-loops strips, and a bit more difficult to fasten when wearing gloves. There are soft tricot areas at the top of the zip and in the chin area for added comfort. The zip is two-way, with double pullers. Weighing in at (for the size) a fairly light weight of 307g the Ulvetanna mitts are are not waterproof, but are windproof and filled with a hydrophobic down, so do offer some wet weather performance; however they are designed for temperatures where water will be in a white, frozen form, not in the rain type form! They have a leather palm for added grip and durability, and this, combined with a good fit (for a fat down mitt) does add quite a bit of usability to the mitts. The Rab Kangri GTX is a very traditional design, with good performance, aimed at the all-year-round hillwalker. We did come up with a negative for the Nebulas though, and that was fit. You can't go far wrong with mitts, as they aren't the most complex of designs, so of course the Nebulas went over our hands and kept them warm! But if we are looking closely then we thought that the mitt itself was slightly too narrow in shape, and the thumb section was hard to find with the thumb, and slightly too high up the mitt. Also we found the insulation or lining behind the hand on just one of the mitts seemed to fold over slighty, as if the inner was wider than the outer and didn't have anywhere to go. It could just have been our test model, so we'd say try before you buy.

Winter Mitts - UKClimbing UKC Gear - GROUP TEST: Winter Mitts - UKClimbing

Rab’s parent company is ‘climate neutral’, offsetting its emissions via carbon credits, including a Zimbabwean forest, support for a hydropower plant in Vietnam, and providing efficient cooking stoves for women in Nepal. The design also makes it a good choice for use in urban conditions in winter, without looking too technical. Rather than pit zips, the Definition has twin zipped side vents. These sit under the sleeve area and are easier to open and close than zips in the sleeves, which can be fiddly to use and access, but the side vents do have a slight tendency to gape open, with the chance of letting in rain in crosswinds. The little extras were all there with Mountain Equipment obviously trying hard to make these the perfect mitts. They have small tabs for clipping them on to a 'biner, and carrying them on your harness (cuffs pointing down, no snow inside), and they have a really nice elastic wrist loop, and an effective one-handed cuff closure system. Our only tiny criticism of these mitts was that the elastic on this was a little long, so when we pulled them tight it was a bit distracting - answer was, we cut 3cm off the end of the elastic - job done. Used on its own we've found the inner is good for fair weather walk-ins, gearing up and camping. The 300-weight polyester fleece feels very snug, and comes a long way up the arm for super wrist coverage. However the fabric provides no wind protection and of course wets out instantly in damp above-zero conditions. The Maier Sports Gravdal XO 2.0 offered extra warmth and is a good choice for those who enjoy hillwalking and the occasional venture into snowsports. The Keela Prosport is another traditional design aimed at hillwalkers who want protection from the elements at a value price. Alpkit has built its business on providing good-value gear without compromising performance, and the Definition fits that description. It’s nicely cut, with durable fabric and good quality fittings. The unbranded waterproof membrane has performance figures comparable with many well known membranes.
